American Red Cross Swimming Lessons |

Private Swim Lessons Sign up for private lessons will begin June 1. All private lesson teachers are WSI certified or have in depth experience in the American Red Cross Swimming curriculum. Adults and Youth Welcome. We’ll focus in one particular area if you like, or other skills to help you improve if you choose. Cost is $20 for 40 minutes. Only one person per teacher, per 40 minute session. You may only sign up for 3 sessions at a time. All lessons must be paid in full before considered confirmed. Registration Information and Policies How to Register: All participants must be registered by the Friday before the respective session starts. Absolutely, no registration will be taken on the first day of class, at the Recreation Office or at the Pool. Registration Opens for the 2010 Sessions: Monday, May 24, 2010. Class sizes are limited and registration is taken on a first come, first serve basis. Cost: Level classes: $50 (Additional $10 for non-residents) Little People and Parent & Child Programs (Ducklings): $40. (Additional $10.00 for non-residents) There is no multiple child discount provided for lessons. If you choose to switch sessions after registering, you must switch in person at our office, with the Parks & Recreation Office and a $10 switching fee will be charged. Each child must use an individual registration form. Students may enroll in only one session at a time. Enrollment for an additional session will be accepted at the end of the first week of the class, after the instructor has suggested whether the student needs to repeat or is ready to move on to the next level. American Red Cross certificates will be issued to participants who successfully complete the requirements. We will continue to provide a skill sheet of a student’s progress with the recommendation for either repeating or moving into the next level. Refunds: are only given in the event of sickness. However, if space is available children can be moved to an alternative session due to illness. No make-ups are given for vacation or other absence. If a child misses the last day of class, certificates or skill sheets will be held at the pool office for only 5 days following the last class. After that time, pool staff holds no responsibility for paperwork.
It is recommended that children ages 6 and up participate in the Level classes. Children ages 3-5 should start out with an introduction called Little People. To advance to a level past the recommended age please provide a copy showing prior participation– such as a card, or evaluation sheet. Parks and Recreation staff reserve the right to combine levels or cancel levels if class minimums are not met. **The baby pool will not be open during any swim lesson session.**

Class Times & Session Length Classes meet Mondays-Thursdays for two weeks unless noted otherwise. Fridays during the two week sessions are reserved for rain out make ups only. The level classes begin on the hour, 9am, or 10am. Your child must attend only the hour they were assigned at the time of registration. Classes are 45 minutes in length and begin on the hour. Little People classes also run for two weeks however they begin at 11:00 and run until 11:30 each day. Following lessons, participants are asked to clear the pool and allow the staff to prepare for open swim. |

Parent and Child Aquatics $40 Ducklings Ages 24 months to-3years Infants must be able to hold their head up. Parent or guardian must attend each class with the child and get wet. Emphasis is on water adjustment, swimming readiness skills, fun and enjoyment in the water. Must have a minimum of 4 to run this class.
Little People $40 3—5 years Children must participate without a PARENT! This class is designed for the beginner, but is to be without a parent and gain that step of independence of going to lessons by oneself. Skills will focus on supported back and front float, and kicking. Blowing bubbles, face submerging all while introducing water fun and safety. Students must attend without parent or guardian in the water with them, if they’re unsuccessful at being independent, student will be moved down to Ducklings Level. *Note– Parents must stay in the designated waiting areas, away from the pool deck while class is in session.
Level 1 Water Exploration $50 Age 5 or pre-requisite of Little People completion. Submerge mouth, nose and eyes, exhale underwater through mouth and nose, open eyes underwater, pick up submerged object, change direction while walking or paddling, roll over from front to back and back to front with support, explore floating on front and back with support, explore swimming on front and back using arm and leg actions with support.
Level 2 Fundamental Skills $50 Submerge entire head, blow bubbles submerging head in a rhythmic pattern (bobbing), open eyes underwater, pick up a submerged object in shallow water, float on front and back, perform front and back glide, roll over from front to back, back to front, tread water using arm and leg motions (chest-deep water), swim on front, back, and side using combined arm and leg actions. |

Level 3: Stroke Development $50
Level 4: Stroke Improvement $50 Perform a dive from a standing or stride position, swim underwater, perform feet-first surface dive. Perform open turns on front and back. Tread water using sculling arm motions and with different kicks. Perform the following: Front and back crawl, Breaststroke Butterfly, Elementary backstroke. Swim on side using scissors-like kick. Perform compact jump into water from a height while wearing a life jacket.
Level 5: Stroke Refinement $50 Standing dive, shallow dive, glide two body lengths and begin any front stroke, tuck surface dive, front flip turn, backstroke flip turn Front and back crawl, butterfly, breaststroke, elementary backstroke, sidestroke, tread water with two different kicks. Learn survival swimming.
Level 6: Swimming and Skill Proficiency $50 All of the above skills for level 5 should be easily completed. The overall goal of this class is for students to swim with proficiency, skill, power and ease within all the strokes. Emphasis will be placed on components related to personal safety, fitness swimming and endurance. Class will also incorporate components for water rescue. |
