The Poquoson Seafood Festival

(Always the third full weekend in October)

The festive highlight and salute to Poquoson’s coastal history takes place each 3^rd weekend in October, in the form of the regionally recognized and highly anticipated Poquoson Seafood Festival.  Food vendors, artisans, historic displays, children’s activities, along with regional musical entertainment draw approximately 50,000 people to Poquoson over a three-day period.

Excellent Schools

Poquoson City Public Schools has a strong tradition of excellence.  The Poquoson City Public School Division is fully accredited by Virginia and consistently ranks among the top school divisions in the state.  All four schools offer a full array of academic programs designed to meet the needs of every student.  Poquoson students have access to unique opportunities such as an elementary foreign language program, international programs and regional programs such as the New Horizons Governor’s School for Science and Technology.

Additionally, Poquoson City Public Schools students participate in a variety of extracurricular activities and athletics. Poquoson has produced award winning clubs and championship teams throughout the years. The tradition of excellence extends into the community as many of the students and staff engage in a variety of community service activities throughout the City of Poquoson. 

A Great Library

In 2009 The Poquoson Library ranked first in both circulation and library visits in the entire Tidewater Area. In addition, the Poquoson Library was recognized in the 2009 Hennen’s American Public Library Ratings as the 3rd best among the 91 public libraries in Virginia and in the 97th percentile nationally among 1,773 public libraries in the population category 10,000-25,000.

The Poquoson library recognizes that the role of the library has shifted from a traditional book lending agency to a community hub where reading materials, computer access, art exhibits, classes, story times, reading clubs, musical performances, public meetings, notary and passport acceptance services and so much more are offered.
