Voter registration in Virginia is available by mail, at the offices of the Voter Registrar, at the office of the Division of Motor Vehicles and at Public Services Agencies.

General Election: First Tuesday after the first Monday in November of each year. The next General Election will be held on November 3, 2009.
Primaries: When one or both political parties choose this method.

Voter Registration Deadline: The Constitution of Virginia requires that you be registered in the precinct in which you live in order to be qualified to vote. In order to be eligible to vote in the General Election to be held on Tuesday, November 3, 2009, you MUST register no later than 5:00 p.m. on Monday, October 5, 2009. If you are currently registered and have moved, you must update your registration record by the registration deadline.
Absentee Voting Deadlines: You may vote by absentee ballot if you are away from your precinct on Election Day, or unable to go to the polls due to illness or disability. The last day to apply for an absentee ballot by mail is Tuesday, October 27, 2009 and Saturday, October 31, 2009 if voting in person. Ballots should be available approximately 45 days prior to the election. In addition to normal office hours, the Voter Registration office at 500 City Hall Avenue will be open on Saturday, October 24, 2009, and October 31, 2009 from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. for the convenience of registered voters who need to vote by absentee ballot for this election date.
All requests for accommodations to vote due to a disability should be made to the Registrar with at least a 48-hour notice.

Who can register to vote in Virginia?
When is the deadline to register?
Anytime of the year. For a general or primary election, the deadline is 29 days before the election.
Do I need to show an ID vote?
YES, all voters are required to show one of the following forms of ID, or sign an Affirmation of Identity Form in order to vote. Va Code 24.2-643

How to register?
Individuals can apply for voter registration or update their voter registration data at any Registrar’s Office in Virginia, Department of Motor Vehicles, Public Libraries or by mail.
CITIZENS WHO REGISTER BY MAIL AND ARE FIRST TIME VOTERS IN VIRGINIA MAY BE REQUIRED TO VOTE IN PERSON ON ELECTION DAY OR IN PERSON ABSENTEE AND SHOW IDENTIFICATION.
How can I register if I cannot leave home because I’m physically disabled or have a continuing illness?

After you have registered to vote, a voter I.D. card will be mailed with the name and address of your voting precinct.

What are the deadlines for absentee voting?
Absentee voting in person begins approximately 45 days before November General Election and approximately 30 days before other elections. Absentee voting ends at 5:00 P.M. on the Saturday before an election.
