Bulky Item Pickup

Bulky items such as furniture, mattresses, refrigerators, etc. may be picked up by calling the Public Works Department at 757-868-3598. Citizens are allowed 1 free pickup per calendar year be it bulky item debris or landscape debris each additional pickup will be charged accordingly. If additional collections are needed they can be provided for a $63 charge.

Bulky items are picked up beginning on Wednesdays and should be placed at curbside the day before the scheduled pickup. Items must be placed away from trees, power lines and other obstructions. Do not place items at curbside more than 24 hours in advance of the scheduled pickup. No items should be placed in the street or block street drainage. Large appliances and other metal items should be separated from other bulky items. Also any washed up sea grass must be placed in a separate pile.

Call Public Works 757-868-3598 to have refrigerants picked up (refrigerators, freezers, A/C). Public Works will coordinate a pickup with a contractor to recycle the unit. We will also be accepting refrigerants at the Convenience Site and the contractor will pickup at the end of the day.  

Unacceptable Items

Items that will not be picked up include:
  • Batteries
  • Black bags
  • Bricks
  • Concrete
  • Construction debris
  • Debris from contracted work
  • Household chemicals
  • Landscaping debris
  • Oil drums
  • Oil tanks
  • Paint
  • Pesticides
  • Propane Tanks
  • Shingles
  • Tires
  • Anything small enough or that can be broken down small enough to be put in the City green garbage bags or carts
  • Items bigger than 4'x4'
We do not pick up on private lanes, items must be brought out to the road.
