Bulk Item Pickup
Bulk debris pick up will occur on Tuesdays by precinct and should be placed curbside by 7 a.m. Tuesday morning. Items must be placed away from trees, power lines, and other obstructions. Do not place items at curbside more than 24 hours in advance of the scheduled pickup. No items should be placed in the street/blocking right of way street drainage. Three feet of clearance around the pile, mindful of overhead clearance, to include utility structures, for the grapple truck. Large appliances and other metal items should be separated from other bulk items. Washed up sea grass must be placed in a separate pile. Landscape debris should be piled separately from all other bulk debris.
New Bulk Debris Services Starting Effective 7/1/25
Effective 7/1/25, the City of Poquoson Public Works Department will offer a new program to provide residents who pay for City Solid Waste Services with bulk debris and landscape disposal services twice a month, one pickup at their home and one trip to the York County Transfer Station. Unlimited landscape disposal at the VPPSA Compost Facility will also be available at no charge. With this new program, the Convenience Site behind City Hall will no longer be in service.
Pickup days will be scheduled each month by precinct as follows:
1st Tuesday: Western
2nd Tuesday: Central
3rd Tuesday: Eastern

Pickups that are requested outside of the normal scheduled week for your precinct are allowed but will incur a charge a charge of $63.
Examples of Acceptable Items
- Clear bags
- Appliances
- Furniture
- Grills (no propane attached)
- Lawn maintenance equipment (with fluids removed)
- Mattresses
- Area rugs (not installed carpet)
- Large electronics*
- Most unattached household items that are not covered in other Solid Waste programs.
- Heavy/large items should be cut down to 4'x4'.
- Seagrass
Unacceptable Items
Items that will not be picked up include:
- Ammunitions
- Batteries*
- Black bags
- Bricks or pavers
- Concrete
- Construction debris (To include cabinetry, decking, fencing, drywall, flooring, insulation, lumber, siding, or windows. If it was attached to the home, it will not be picked up.)
- Contract/business generated debris
- Household chemicals*
- Landscaping debris (Should be piled separately from all other bulk debris.)
- Oil drums
- Oil tanks
- Paint*
- Pesticides*
- Propane Tanks
- Shingles
- Tires*
- Anything small enough or that can be broken down small enough to be put in the City green garbage bags or carts
- Heavy/large items should be no larger than 4'x4'
We do not pick up on private lanes, items must be brought out to the City right-of-way.
Debris piles should be no larger than six cubic yards (example: 9' W x 6' D x 3' H).
*A separate solid waste program is available for these items.
Additional Services
- Trips to the York County Transfer Station will be allowed for free once a month.
- Yard debris can be taken to the VPPSA Compost Facility also at no charge.
- Proof of name and residency will be required, such as an ID or utility bill.
- Both facilities are located at 145 Goodwin Neck Road.
